Investment strategy

FII Tech Growth Fund invests in small and medium companies that features capacity and technological heritage, with an approximate turnover between 5 and 70 millions of Euro, that wish to undertake growth and innovation processes, thereby strenghtening their commercial and competitive capability inside emerging markets and still existent markets at international level.

The investments are addressed towards companies already invested by other venture capital operators and also mature and consolidated companies addressed to undertake new and ambitious projects of technological growth.

The Team boasts a specific expertise in the ICT (services and technological contents included) and industrial innovation (highly technology oriented manufacturing companies) sectors, but it operates in all the innovative fields.

At the time of the investment, the targeted companies should have a relevant part of their business based in Italy.

The investments take place through the acquisition of participations (majorities and minorities), investing between 5 and 20 millions of Euro in capital for growth, partial replacement capital, spin-offs, corporate carve-outs and pre-IPO.

Claudio Catania is a Senior Partner at Fondo Italiano d'Investimento SGR since January 2011. He began his career in the private equity sector in 2000. Before joining the Fondo Italiano team, he worked for The Carlyle Group at their London and Milan offices, completing investments in European SMEs. He has invested in and served on the boards of directors of SmartTrust, FRSGlobal and UC4 with which he followed the Appworx acquisition. He previously worked for Morgan Stanley Capital Partners where he completed three investments and one disinvestment. He began his professional career at Hewlett Packard in Great Britain, Silicon Valley and France working in the central research and development units on the creation of new divisions based on the use of new technologies. Many of his activities have been published on international specialist magazines. Claudio graduated with a first class degree in Electronic Engineering from the Polytechnic University in Milan and obtained a Master's Degree in Telecommunications and Information Technology from Cefriel (Milan Polytechnic University). He also received a Master of Business Administration from Insead (Fontainebleau) and he is a Certified Financial Analyst since 2005.

Mauro Pretolani is Senior Partner of Fondo Italiano d'Investimento SGR SpA, that he joined in February 2015. He recently partecipated to the launch of the new FII Tech Growth fund, for which he is also a board member of the portfolio company BeMyEye. Mauro has over 20 years of technology investment experience in Europe, USA, Israel and China. Since 1999, Mauro has served as a General Partner of TLcom Capital LLP, participating in the establishment of the management company, fundraising and the management of TLcom I and II funds. Mauro was also an independent director of Seat Pagine Gialle (PG.MI) from 2012 to 2015. Since 2016 Mauro has been a board member of MotorK on a personal basis. Over the years Mauro has also held operational roles in technology companies, such as Executive Chairman, CEO and EVP sales. At the beginning of his career Mauro worked for Bain & Company as Manager and for Procter & Gamble in both Marketing and Finance. He graduated in Economics at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" and obtained an MBA "with distinction" from Harvard Business School.

Marco Vassallo is a Senior Associate at Fondo Italiano d'Investimento SGR since December 2017. He previously worked at A.T. Kearney for three years, where he have been involved in several projects for national and international companies. With regard to those projects, Marco worked as an Advisor for M&A operations inside the TMT industry, covering all the steps of the entire process, from commercial Due Diligence phase to the Post Merger Integration phase. Marco graduated summa cum laude in Mathematics Engineering at the Polytechnic University in Milan and also in Engineering at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. He also obtained an MBA "with distinction" from INSEAD. During his academic research activity, Marco visited the University of Cambridge, the Max-Planck-Institute, and the PSA-Peugeot Citroen.

Federico Cappellin joined Fondo Italiano d'Investimento SGR in January 2017. He already worked as a Summer Intern for Fondo Italiano d’Investimento SGR in 2014 and 2015 covering investments in technology and mechatronics. In summer 2016 he worked as an Intern in Debt Capital Market of UniCredit Bank in Milan. He also worked as an Advisor in the development of the strategy and business plan of a primary company operating in the sector of microcontrollers. He graduated (M.Sc.) in Management at Bocconi University. Previously he obtained a Master in Merchant Banking at LIUC University and a B.A. in Economics with concentration in Finance and Corporate Management at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan.
