Investment strategy

The Fund began with the objective of strenghten the global competitiveness of the italian companies operating in strategic sectors of excellence, by encouraging consolidation and integration processes (downstream and upstream) and also promoting the cultural transformation.

The Fund, focused on a buy and build direction, operates with an investment strategy addressed towards small and medium companies, with the aim of using these as useful platforms for the aggregation of other companies of the same chain/sector, favouring an industrial approach characterized by a medium – long term investment horizon (patient capital), with the objective of strenghten the competitiveness of the italian companies.

The Fund seeks to promote the value creation also through the facilitation of generational replacement processes, managerialization and the adoption of governance models and most advanced management and manufacturing systems (Industry 4.0).

The Fund is particularly focused on the intervention on particular chains/sectors of excellence as agrifood, mechatronics/advanced mechanical industry and Italian design, with also the possibility of expanding towards other sectors of specialization considered a symbol of Made in Italy.

Gesualdo Di Bernardo is a Senior Partner at Fondo Italiano d'Investimento SGR since January 2018. He started his career at The Boston Consulting Group in 1995 where he took part in strategic consultancy projects related to Retail, Pharmaceutical e Chemical sectors. In 1999 he joined The Carlyle Group as a Director, where he has been involved in several Private Equity transactions (majorities and minorities) in Italy and abroad, in well known companies such as Riello, Avio, Moncler, Giannoni France and Twin Set Simona Barbieri. In 2011 he took part in the firm's african fund start up in Johannesburg, South Africa. From 2012 to 2015 he served as CEO of the womenswear company Liviana Conti and in the meantime as Board member of Twin Set Simona Barbieri. In 2016 he joined Xenon Private Equity Partners, where he worked as a Partner, taking part in small cap operations with a dimension between 10 and 20 million of Euros, also undertaking management duties inside one of the portfolio companies. Gesualdo graduated with honours in Electronic Engineering from the University of Genoa in 1994 and in 1998 he obtained an MBA from INSEAD.

Gianpaolo Di Dio is a Senior Partner at Fondo Italiano d'Investimento SGR since October 2010. Previously, he completed successful turnarounds of the Arcotronics Groups, as Managing Director, and the company Netscalibur Italia where he was initially Managing Director and later Executive Chairman. He was also one of the co-founders and General Partners of TLcom Capital LLP, a venture capital initiative based in London, regulated by the FSA and set up as a joint-venture with Morgan Stanley Capital Partners. For them he managed a wide range of ICT investments and divestments in Europe and Israel. Gianpaolo was previously a Senior Manager of Bain & Company, working mainly on strategy and business development projects in the Telecom and Technology sectors in Europe and Silicon Valley. Before that, he was a Financial Analyst for Abbott Laboratories. Gianpaolo graduated with honours in Economics and Business from the LUISS University in Rome where he also obtained an MBA. He has been a Chartered Accountant since 1993. He has served on the following Boards of Directors: Iobox - mobile telephony technology/software; Xtempus (UK) - mobile telephony technology/software; Netscalibur Italia (Italy) - internet service provider; CommProve (Ireland) a mobile network technology; Arcotronics Group (Italy) - electronic components.

Previously, he served as Head of the Merchant Banking and Private Equity division of Efibanca where he worked from 1992 at the Rome and Milan offices, managing equity investments and divestments in medium-sized industrial businesses, management companies and private equity funds. He previously worked for Finanziaria Italiana di Partecipazioni (BNL group) and later for Assitalia (INA group). He has worked in various industrial sectors and has served on several boards of directors of industrial and financial companies including Bormioli Rocco (glass industry), Fidia Farmaceutici, Spal Automotive (components), DeDa Group (ICT), Monticchio Gaudianello and Kamps AG (food industry), Comital Saiag (aluminium), Malo (clothing), Gruppo Stabila (bricks and building products) and many others. Francesco graduated with honours in Economics and Business from the University La Sapienza in Rome and he is a Chartered Accountant and Auditor.

From 2002 to 2008 she was a member of the private equity team of Interbanca SpA, initially as an analyst and then as an associate. From 2000 to 2002 she worked as an assistant professor on Business Economics and Administration and Business Finance courses at the University Carlo Cattaneo LIUC where she was also a research associate for the Private Equity Monitor - PEM research centre.
